Description
The American Strawberry Bush is native woodland plant that is sure to be a conversation piece in the garden! Found in forested or woodland areas as an understory plant and often in swampy areas, it has very unusual flowers and even more unusual fruits. In late spring or early summer 5-petaled creamy yellow-green flowers appear that then develop into very showy pinkish-crimson ball-shape, strawberry-like bumpy pods that burst open to reveal bright orange berries while the green foliage morphs into a yellowish green shade and finally turns to shades of pink and red. A really cool plant that deserves a spot in every garden where it will grow. USDA Zones 5a-9b
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 to 7 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, the American Strawberry Bush is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in partially shaded woodland settings or shade gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Â 10 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The American Strawberry Bush is very easy to grow and exceptionally low maintenance. It adapts to a wide range of soil types, including clay, provided they are well-drained. The plant prefers part shade. Morning and evening sun are fine but provide shade or dappled light during the hotter afternoon hours.Â
