Description
A relatively unknown but easy-to-grow and very pretty Eastern North American native perennial wildflower, Pink Profusion Indian Physic, also called Bowman’s Root, is a joy in shady to partially shaded garden beds and woodland settings. In late spring through early summer, a profusion of delicate, 5-petaled, star-shaped soft-pink flowers are held daintily above a 3′ by 3′ mound of divided red tinted leaves on deep red stems. What’s really neat is how the flowers dance about and shimmer in the slightest breeze. In fall, the leaves turn a bright maroon. You’ll be happy to know that it is pest, disease and drought resistant when established, and deer and rabbits have shown no interest in our gardens. It is somewhat slow to establish, but like Amsonia or Baptisia, it’s very long-lived and well worth the wait!
Wildlife Benefits
Many pollinators, from butterflies to skippers to bees, use the flower as a nectar source in the spring and early summer.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and equally as wide, Pink Profusion Indian Physic is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces or groupings where space will allow. It is especially nice in woodland setting and around outdoor sitting areas where the pretty flowers can be enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to shade and woodland gardens, native plant gardens, butterfly and pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, and the periphery of a stream or pond.Â
Suggested Spacing:Â 24 inches apart for groupings; 4 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Pink Profusion Indian Physic is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and part shade. We suggest at least 3 hours of direct sun or all-day filtered sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade is perfect. in full sun to part shade. Plants can be cut back to the ground after going dormant in winter or prior to new growth emerging in spring.
