Description

An exceptionally attractive North American native, the Weeping Yaupon Holly is a beautiful tall shrub or small tree prized for its distinctive weeping habit and bright red berries in fall and winter. Weeping Yaupon has many uses in landscape design and grows well in moist or dry soils. It responds very well to pruning and shearing so is perfect for creating unique shapes and forms, such as the umbrella and columnar forms seen in the photos above.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 10 to 30 feet tall and 6 to 12 feet wide depending on pruning, the Weeping Yaupon Holly can be grown as a tall shrub or tree. As a tall shrub it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, to frame the corners of tall homes, as espalier (grown against a wall), or in privacy screen plantings. As this yaupon holly grows taller lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive evergreen tree. Responds very well to pruning to create various interesting topiary such as umbrella, pyramid or columnar forms. A fine addition to holly gardens, bird gardens, zen gardens, berry gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 6 to 7 feet apart for privacy screens, 15 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Yaupon Holly variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

A sturdy North American native, Weeping Yaupon Holly is adaptable to a wide range of cultural conditions, from well-drained to wet and acid to alkaline soils and full sun to part shade. It is very tolerant of drought and sea salt, and is one of the most durable and adaptable of the small leaved evergreen Hollies for use in southern landscapes. Light pruning may be necessary to maintain shape, but unlike the species it requires less maintenance because it does not sprout from the roots.

Due to the recent freezes in Texas, Weeping Yaupon Hollies are almost impossible to find anywhere in the state. So it was a real leap of faith for me to order a 3 gallon one from Georgia, not knowing how it would be shipped or in what condition it would arrive. It was shipped on a Wed (April 14) and I received it via FedEx on Sat, and it arrived in excellent condition. I put it in the ground that afternoon and it took off immediately. It is now full of new growth and even starting to put on berries. I could not be happier with it. The first picture is the day it arrived and the second picture was taken this morning. When I began looking here to replace them I found that local nurseries do not stock or have access to these plants. We just received our Weeping Yaupon within the last three weeks. The tree arrived in excellent condition and the height was better than expected. We had ordered another weeping yaupon from another online nursery and there was no comparison in quality and delivery. The other nursery shipped out on a Friday, so Sunday was lost as a delivery day. Every day counts when plants are shipped in a box. The other tree arrived with the root ball in jell rather than soil. We just hope it will come back from the shock. No comparison in quality.
