Description
A compact Cotinus, the Winecraft Black Smokebush is a perfect for smaller garden spaces where it’s larger growing cousins just won’t fit. Providing three-season color in the landscape, the rounded leaves on this handsome 6 feet by 6 feet rounded shrub emerge a rich purple in spring and gradually turn to a darker, almost-black color by summer, then turning to a brilliant orange in fall. What’s more, as with its cousins, wispy red flowers emerge in summer that turn to a hazy-violet smoke color, hence the name. A shrub that is sure to add unique color and texture to your landscape!
Landscape & Garden Uses
A dwarf that grows only 4 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide, the Winecraft Black Smokebush is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and home foundation plantings or in groupings in larger spaces. A fine addition to black or purple theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 8 feet for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Winecraft Black Smokebush is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to mostly sun for best foliage color and flowering. Good drought tolerance when established. Constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Exceptionally low maintenance with little to no pruning necessary.

I received a 3 gallon approximately 3 foot Smokebush that had the plumes on it a few weeks ago. It’s now blooming. It looks very healthy and has leafed out beautifully even more since planting it. I appreciate Angie, and all customer service agents that take pictures for every time I ask for a product. Because of that, I’m able to buy what I want for the garden. Great products and service keep me coming back.——————————————–Angie’s the best!! Thanks for the photo! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I searched high and low locally (Puget Sound area) for this particular smoke bush and had to turn to online, which is how I found Wilson Brothers. The plant arrived quickly and in stellar packaging. I have placed my second order already, camellia sasanquas that are also hard to source in my area. I volunteer at a rare plant nursery (Far Reaches in Port Townsend, WA) so I know when plants are packaged well for long-distance shipping.———————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! My 3 gal. smokebush arrived promptly and even though it was shipped at the end of November (to my zone 6) it arrived in perfect condition and looks extremely healthy. It was packed very nicely and since going in the ground it doesn’t look like it has skipped a beat!————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! I have ordered from many online nurseries over the years and have never been as satisfied as I am with Wilson Brothers. My only regret is that I found them late in the season. I will be back in the spring for sure!————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! See ya next Spring! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
